      What Does BTU Mean for an Air Conditioner?

      BTU stands for British thermal unit. A room air conditioner's BTU-per-hour rating describes its cooling capacity. The right size should cool steadily, control humidity and avoid unnecessary cycling.

      If the AC Is Too Small

      • It may struggle on the hottest days.
      • It can run for long periods without reaching the set temperature.
      • Connected spaces may remain warm.

      How to Measure for a Window Air Conditioner

      Identify the window style first. Many standard units are designed for vertically opening single-hung or double-hung windows.

      Compare the opening with the exact minimum and maximum window dimensions in the model's installation instructions. Cabinet width alone does not confirm fit.

      Replacing an older wall AC

      Do Not Match a Wall Air Conditioner by BTU Alone

      The existing opening, sleeve, airflow path, voltage and plug all matter.

      A similar outside size does not prove compatibility.

      The replacement must be approved for the sleeve or opening and must maintain the airflow and clearances required by its manufacturer.

      Electrical compatibility

      115V, 208V or 230V: Why Air Conditioner Voltage Matters

      Smaller room air conditioners commonly use 115V. Some higher-capacity or heat-equipped models require 208/230V service and a different receptacle. Check the old rating label, plug, outlet and the new model's installation specifications.

      Do not use an adapter or extension cord unless the manufacturer expressly permits it. Confirm that the electrical circuit meets the model's requirements before installation.

      Air Conditioner Buying Questions

      How does ceiling height change the BTU estimate?

      The calculator treats eight feet as the baseline. It changes the floor-area estimate proportionally to room volume, so a 12-foot ceiling applies a 1.5× height factor before the other room adjustments.

      Can I replace my old AC with any model that has the same BTU?

      No. BTU describes cooling capacity, not physical, sleeve, airflow or electrical compatibility.

      Can a window AC be installed through a wall?

      Only when the manufacturer specifically permits through-the-wall installation and the required airflow and clearances can be maintained.

      Can I reuse my existing wall sleeve?

      Possibly, but only when the replacement model is approved for that sleeve or opening.

      Should I buy more BTU to be safe?

      Not automatically. Oversizing can cause frequent cycling and weaker humidity removal. Start with the calculated range, then confirm model and installation requirements.

      Why do portable ACs show two different BTU ratings?

      Portable models may list a larger ASHRAE figure and a lower DOE/SACC figure. This tool prioritizes DOE/SACC when matching portable products because it better reflects portable-unit performance under the newer test method.
